Never Take the First Offer

Man, too often in the past few months I’ve seen cases where someone sold a website or domain name for far less than I, or someone I knew, would have paid. Had the owner only done even a little checking around, they could have netted themselves several hundred thousand more dollars in some cases.
Never, ever, ever take the first offer without checking around. It is bad form to ask for an offer and then turn around and shop that number around to everyone and their brother, but at least contact some likely buyers and see if they’d be interested in making an offer. If you can get a few you can always take the higher one — and in most cases at least one of the buyers will be willing to up their bid if they’re really interested.
And don’t buy for a second that their offer is only good right now. If they’re truly interested, they’ll be there next week too. If they try to pressure you into taking an offer, it probably means they know their offer won’t stand up.
And if what you’re selling approaches seven figures in value, absolutely work with an investment bank or someone who knows how to make a market. The fee these guys charge is more than made up by the difference in price that they can get you vs. you just taking it to market yourself. If you need a recommendation on someone like that, I have a strong one. Just contact me.
