We Have a Winner!

Congratulations to Peter Kimmich from TryOurLA.com, the winner of the $10,000 Business Boost contest!  I was floored by how many truly worthy submissions we received.  There were international submissions, funny submissions and submissions from site owners whose topic really stunk -- literally.  And the sites ran the gamut from glimmers in the eye to businesses that could see the finish line of being able to cash out in a very big way.  There are so many very talented, ... The $10,000 Business Boost Contest

Two and half years ago, I was stuck.  My business was doing alright, but I was really struggling to take it to the next level.  Then 15 minutes with Aaron Wall changed everything for good. For me it was Aaron; for you it might be someone else.  For all of us, though, there are times when we just need something to put our business on a brand new growth curve.  So what better gift could I give you than a ... The $X,000 Business Boost

Two and half years ago, I was stuck.  My business was doing alright, but I was really struggling to take it to the next level.  Then 15 minutes with Aaron Wall changed everything for good. Don’t Forget the Link

Back in January, Aaron wrote about the corrosive effect that Twitter is having on marketing online.  Because Twitter links are no-followed (and often TinyURLed), sites like Google never see the links that people tweet.  There's also a very temporal nature to Twitter that, as Aaron puts it, makes the content "here today, gone today."  Since then, he's even gone so far as to say that he's going to cut back on social networking because of negative effects like ... Young & Ignorant, Get Some Perspective

If you're reading this, you're probably young and successful (or at least headed that way) and by means that would still largely be considered unconventional by most people.  (You can really make a living running websites all by yourself?  Shut up.) Because of that unconventional nature, most of us are sorely lacking in perspective.  If remember any history we learned in school, very little of it is business history or economic history -- and what is business or economic probably isn't ... What Type of Site?

I frequently see articles and even entire books on how to select a good topic for your website.  I can't recall ever seeing anything on choosing what type of site to build for that topic, though, and that can be every bit as important as choosing the topic. So if you're just getting started, I hope this list will be a good resource for helping you select what kind of site to build.  If you have comments or questions, please leave ... Keep reading »

How to Sell a Website for $1M

Almost two years ago, Andy Hagans wrote one of the best articles I've ever read: How to: Build an Affiliate Site You Can Sell for $1M.  It was great not only because it was so practical, but because the information came from someone who genuinely knew what he was talking about.  It's an absolute must-read if you're at any stage of building an online business. I've learned over the past year, though, that hitting the $1M mark isn't the finish ... Keep reading »

Devious WordPress Hack Using wp_remote_fopen

A blog I had running WordPress 2.6.5 was hacked to include a truckload of pharmaceutical links.  That was nothing new.  I've seen that on my blogs and on others. What was different this time, though, was the method for including the links.  I won't republish the code, but here are enough of the functions and variables it used for someone to find this post when searching for more information or to determine if their blog was hacked using the same ... How About a Little Gratitude?

Most of us (me included) have some degree of an entitlement mentality.  When we get things, some part of us either feels like we deserved them or that there was no real cost or effort on the part of the giver.  That needs to change -- for you and me both. There are people in our lives whose contributions we should really appreciate, and showing them ... Keep reading »
